Hemel Hempstead was mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Hamelhamstede.
St. Mary's, the parish church of Hemel Hempstead, was built in 1140. It is one of the best examples of a Norman church in the country and has a 200 feet tall spire which was added in the twelfth century.
In 1952 the then new Queen Elizabeth II laid a foundation stone for a new church at Adeyfield, a district of the town.
Richard Field, a theologian linked with the foundation of the Anglican Church, was born in hemel Hempstead in 1561.
