During the Saxon period, there are records of Theodor of Tarsus presiding over the Church Synod in the year 673
The building known as 'Hertford Castle' is in fact just the gatehouse of the original building. The actual castle is no longer there.
In about 1087 Ralph de Limesi, a nephew of William The Conqueror, built Hertford Priory, which was dedicated to St John and St Mary.
There are remnants of the ancient church of St Mary's in Hertford's museum and also the alter stone is now present in St Andrew's Church. It is thought that St Mary's was demolished in the early part of the sixteenth century.
