Letchworth is actually 'Letchworth Garden City' which was the world's first garden city founded in 1903 by Ebenezer Howard.
The land in the area of Letchworth was originally bought by Quakers who intended to farm and build a community. However the soil was found to be of poor quality for crop growing.
The village of Willian, on the outskirts of Letchworth, has a Norman church dedicated to St. Paul.
