Tring Fact File
The old Roman road of Akeman Street (now the A41) links Tring with London and Cirencester. The road passes through a gap in the Chiltern Hills.
The mansion at Tring park was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1682 for Colonel Guy though the Manor of Tring is described in the Domesday Book of 1086. George Washington's grandfather lived there later and the estate became the home of the Rothschild family in the late ninteenth century.
The 2nd Lord Rothschild, Lionel Walter Rothschild, built a private zoological museum in Tring. This is now part of the Natural History Museum.
The town expanded with the building of the Grand Union Canal in 1793 and the coming of the railways in 1835.
